Winter 2022 Workshops

CMSWR is offering the following group classes this winter!

Group classes are open to all CMSWR students. There is no additional cost to join these groups.

1. Music Creation & Improvisation

Date: Thursdays: March 10, 17, 24, 31 (4 weeks)

Time: 4:30pm - 5:15pm

Age: 9-13

Location: IN PERSON - Beckett School at Laurier (190 Lester St, Waterloo)

This ensemble is for all of you who miss making music in person! We will be exploring music creation as a group using improvisation and musical prompts. Participants will develop their confidence and creativity as they create music together, working towards a final collaborative project. All instruments and skill levels are welcome. We will be drumming as well. This four week workshop will take place in person at the Beckett School at Laurier.


Our Facilitators: Charlie Dunsmuir and Jess Silva are community music students at Wilfrid Laurier University. Charlie is also one of our excellent guitar teachers at CMSWR!

2. Ukulele Ensemble

Date: Mondays: March 21, 28, April 4, 11 (4 weeks)

Time: 4:30pm - 5:30pm

Age: 7-12

Location: ONLINE

Interested in learning a new instrument? Want to connect, make new friends and play music with other students? Check out the Ukulele Ensemble! This four-week series will focus on learning the basics of ukulele, developing your ukulele skills, as well as building a number of songs to play! Ukuleles will be provided.


Our Facilitator: Jessica Traynor is a Laurier community music graduate and currently working towards her Bachelor of Education at Queen's University. Previously, she taught piano at CMSWR for three years (amongst leading other groups!) and is currently a member of CMSWR's board of directors.

3. Audio Recording

Date: Wednesdays: March 23, 30, April 6, 13, 20 (5 weeks)

Time: 4:30pm - 5:30pm

Age: 13-18

Location: IN PERSON - Heffner Studio, Kitchener Public Library (85 Queen St N, Kitchener)


This workshop series will introduce teens to beginner methods of home recording and audio editing. Participants will experience the process of writing, recording, editing/mixing and distributing music, working towards a final project. This five week series will be held in person at Heffner Studio located at the Kitchener Public Library.


Our Facilitator: Mason Smyth is a recording artist, producer, and community musician with a mission to facilitate and promote accessible music creation in the Kitchener/Waterloo Region. He has a BMus in Integrated Musical Arts and a MA in Community Music from Wilfrid Laurier University, and is a recent addition to the Heffner Studio team at Kitchener Public Library. As an artist, Mason has a passion for songwriting and recording and has independently released several albums over the past decade, covering everything from writing, to recording, to mixing and mastering, to distributing and marketing.
