Community Music School of Waterloo Region was founded in 2012 by Kari Kokko.
Prior to 2012, during her undergraduate studies, Kari was involved in a community music program in partnership with The Working Centre. Laurier students received course credit for teaching students. Soon after, she began working at Pathways to Education Kitchener running the Group Mentoring Program. Some of the mentors began teaching music to some of the participants and, as a result, a partnership between Pathways to Education and the KW Symphony was formed to offer music lessons to teens.
A couple of years later, out of the momentum built by these programs, the Community Music School of Waterloo Region was founded as a program of Lyrical Lines Education Network. The following year an Advisory Committee was formed and we welcomed our first paid staff member in September 2014.
